I Won a CD at School: When I was in elementary school I won a CD. I don't recall all the details, but it was part of some sort of contest (I think it ran monthly???), and had something to do with student performance. So they're reading the morning announcements over the loud speaker, and they get to part about the contest. Suddenly, I hear my name. Apparently I've won which, was a surprise to me. So I head down to the principal's office to collect my prize, fully expecting someone to say, "Oops, we've made a mistake." I get there, and they hand me a copy of Weezer's Maladroit. I had never heard of the band before. Back then most of my music exposure came from listening to the local pop hits radio station. We also had a modern rock station, but I hadn't discovered it yet. I owned very few CDs around this time. Basically some mix CD's like Now, and some boy band stuff. Yes, I had Nsync :P. Another student in my class had Maladroit as well, and she told me it sucked bad. I suspected I might like it a bit better than her though. So I took it home, and gave it a listen. It was definitely harder than most of what I was used to, but I found a couple of songs I thought were okay. Over the years the album grew on me. It actually had some good stuff on it. I've always been really impressed with my school for that. Normally when you win something at school you expect it to be lame, but they probably gave me the coolest CD I owned at the time. Someone working in that office definitely knew their stuff. I don't have the physical CD anymore. I've been digital for many years now. But I still have a copy of the album on my phone. Getting that CD was definitely an important moment in my life.
